Fallout 1 is like the demo for fallout 2. It's so short compared to 2 that it's barely 1/4 the game.

Oh, and ruin a surprise for some people...if you're good, you can get a car in 2 *wink*.

I don't think you're ruining a surprise for anybody since the box advertised that you could get a car. Even if you don't have the box, or if you don't like to read things that are printed on boxes, or if rabid squirrels knocked you down and set fire to the box before you could get to the part that mentions the car; you're told you could have the car in the second town you come to (only an hour or two into the game IIRC).

And besides that, contrary to what the game's designers might want you to think, you can't really play anything other than (at least) moderately good... not if you want to get any XP and see anything even close to the entirety of the game anyway.

I got about 85% through #2 before it was evident that I should figure out how to get the car. Technically, you really only need the car in the last part when you've got a time crunch. You can carry all the weapons and ammo you NEED on your person or on one of your minions.

Sure, it makes random encounters during travel less, but it is still doable without the car.

I actually ended up re-starting the game because I missed a few other things that were really required, and got the car on the way through that time.

One dork to rule them all
One dork to find them
One dork to bring them all
And in the open development environment bind them
In the land of Linux where Red Hat lies

With that said, anyone currently playing Fallout that isn't me must be maimed. Your wicked and cruel enjoyment of that classic game makes the baby Jesus cry. ;P
