In the middle of reading "Pragmatic Thinking and Learning"
I learned a new favorite phrase today: "second-order incompetence". It is the condition of being incompetent at recognizing your own incompetence.

That's awesome and awful. And so true.

Few people who are incompetent have any idea that they are.

I have heard numerous examples from coworkers and friends who have worked with someone who really had no clue, who did poorly at everything. When the boss came to them and said, "we need to talk", they were excited because they believed that they were going to get a promotion. When they found out that they really weren't doing a good job, they were crushed. They tried harder, but it didn't help.

The number of people who are incompetent and recognize it is probably a vanishingly slim minority.
