I was feeling down. Iron Maiden* cheers me up. But that's for another time.) So I decided to buy some of the remastered Iron Maiden albums to give them a listen. They are . . . very good. But that's not really what I wanted to tell you. In the same CD rack, there is a tribute album called "Numbers from the Beast: An All-Star Tribute to Iron Maiden". I got this on MP3 from my brother - all of the artist tags are ID3v1, which means no multi-artist, which means every artist for every track is "Various Artists". The cover of "The Evil That Men Do" on it is incredibly good - the singer blew me away with his performance, but I had no idea who it was.

Turns out it's Chris Jericho. No kidding - that dude can sing.

* Massive Digression: A lot of people I went to school with never listened to metal bands - their most vocal fans tended to be the people who gave you the evil eye while you were trying to get books from your locker. They cut class to smoke, huff gas, and listen to Iron Maiden, Slayer, Ministry, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Tool, Prong, Metallica, Megadeth - you name it. That's really not the fault of the bands - it's more a marketing problem the bands have. If you missed out on these bands, then your musical diet is deficient in some important heavy metals. Some of this music is pure adolescent aggression - a lot of it is intelligent, energetic, and powerfully lyrical. Iron Maiden wrote a 12-minute metal version of "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" that was so good that my 78-year-old English teacher had us all listen to it in our poetry class after Beowulf.

Clearly, this is information that readers of Wikipedia need to have.

More or less agreed. Though at least where I grew up, not all metalheads were jerks; it was almost miraculous.

Damn, you just gave me a huge jones for Maiden... time to dig out Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and listen to it straight through.

Also, there was another cover of "The Evil That Men Do" done by After Forever. I thought it was the one you were talking about at first, but considering it's got fly female vocals, I'm guessing not. Very worth checking out if you haven't heard it yet.

Wow...I really need to convince you to let me steal music from you now. I lost all the mp3s (from the bands you listed) that once resided on my iPod. I knew I should have backed that stuff up somewhere. Little did I realize that lending my iPod to someone would result in my loss of happiness.

So, what will it take for me to convince you to let me come by and steal some music from you? :)

Plus, of course, Maiden are made of sheer awesomeness. And, Chris Jericho, who'da thunk it?
