A compendium of idle speculations
Every time I see meat now, I see barrels of oil that were used to produce the fertilizer that was used to grow the crops that was used to feed the animal. That's what that look on my face is, so stop staring at me like that..

It's not a mid-life crisis at 26, but it sure feels like one.

I should have a birthday party someday soon.

I should fix this computer so it doesn't randomly conk out due to thermal issues, but the sheer amount of petroleum required to construct and assemble the components is mind-boggling.

So let's deal with the issues, okay. We have a really serious petroleum situation right now.

Um, please try to have a wonderful day.

I love you Doc.

I love you too :-)

Wow. I never imagined another geek was feeling the same way.
I've started staring at the plastic and metal parts I love to play with and getting absolutely mind-boggled by what's behind them.
We should get together sometime. It's been a while. We don't have to talk about petroleum, though, if you don't want to. And I can ride my bike over. ;-)

Not to be rude, but I think you have me mistaken for somebody else.

So...I guess I read your post entirely wrong. What was it about?
Hoc Est Qui Sumusdiscoflamingo on April 30th, 2006 06:58 am (UTC)
No, not that part - it was the getting together part. I thought we'd only ever talked in real life maybe once or twice in the whole time I've known you. I could be misremembering, or you could be exceptionally sociable. I dunno.

Thanks Doc...now I feel dirty...
Well, dirtier.

Thinking about giving up those Depleted Uranium rounds now?

I wish people would stop doing that.

I'm working on it!

Man, you sound like you worry about this stuff even more than I do. Crazy stuff. Are you a vegetarian, by any chance?
Hoc Est Qui Sumusdiscoflamingo on April 29th, 2006 08:10 pm (UTC)
Lacto-ovo vegetarian, actually.
Nightwalkerhalfawake on April 29th, 2006 10:08 pm (UTC)
Ah. I had to look that up to see what the Lacto-ovo part meant, but okay, that makes sense. That sounds like what I assumed regular vegetarians are. I think people who don't eat meat or any type of dairy products as vegans, not vegetarians, but I dunno if that's the accurate use of the word or not.

So, if you don't know, I work for the 3rd largest silicon chip manufacturer in the world.

Our CEO told us we needed to save energy in light of global warming and the price of oil. He asked for feedback on what as a company we would do to be eco citizens.

I suggested that saving money on energy was rather hypocritical given the volume of toxic chemicals we use to make our stuff and then subsequently dump into the same landfill that's growing with obselete technology we made.

Went up the management chain through three managers before they all lost their balls.

Wherever we walk, what ever we do we cause damage. I suppose the only question is how much.

800 times the weight of a silicon chip is needed in fossil fuels, 31 times its weight in chemicals and 16,000 times its weight in water.

43% of pure silicon crystal is wasted in the production of a silicon chip and this type of high-grade silicon requires 160 times the energy used to produce raw silicon. Half the total energy used by the chip in its lifetime is in fact used in the creation of pure silicon.

While 630g of fossal fuels is used for every 1g of device, the automotive industry only uses 2g of fossal fuel for every 1g of car.

I think that is the one genuine point to be made in all of this. Some days are better than others, but we all have (and always will have) blood on our hands (so to speak).

Here's the smell of oil still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. O, O, O!

I think if you are feeling guilty that it would be ok to forgive yourself. You know better now.
Hoc Est Qui Sumusdiscoflamingo on April 29th, 2006 08:11 pm (UTC)
I don't think it's really a question of feeling guilty - it's a question of realizing my own complicit role in the death cycle of the world.

Oh, Doc, I less than three you thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much. I do what I can for this fucked-up planet, but then I look around at how much I'm not doing, and how much is being done over which I have zero control, and I tell ya, it's enough to make me want to sit down and weep.

Would this be a fashionably late birthday party for '06 or a sensibly early one for '07?
