For those of you who want something to use to explain to somebody what white privilege is, I would recommend this.

That's painful.

It is - but I bet you took a class with that girl, didn't you?

There's a chance I did go to school with someone like that. It sure doesn't make it any less awful. Incidentally, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings was removed from regular curriculum at my high school because someone objected to the rape scene and parents complained. General vocal consensus in my English class at the time (I was in 9th grade if memory serves) was that this was an overreaction, but obviously someone out there didn't think so.

I read that book as part of my community college lit class. While the class was boring overall, the literature itself was pretty good. FAR better than the books we were required to read in the HONORS program at the state university.

Why do you say that? What did they have you reading in the Honors class?

A couple of angry lesbians were teaching an honors class about how men are evil by nature, and the male gender was not needed in society. I remember one piece of literature that was about an alien planet where all the people were asexual. Yes, this was REQUIRED READING. None of the men in the class got very good grades no matter how much effort they demonstrated, while all of the women got excellent grades... some while putting forth no effort at all.

I'm sorry, that's unfortunate. That sort of feminism is not mainstream by any means but it's still out there. You make it seem like the whole point of the class for them was to punish unsuspecting men. What could have been a challenging class about radical feminist lit just ended up being an exercise in stereotypes... seems like. I hope that you would place the fault on them, though. Not on the books.

No, it's still very awful - I just thought it might be illustrative to certain people.

It was indeed. I didn't entirely understand the phrase myself. Thank you.
