Doc is tired
I tried to quit smoking last week - work stress increased itself threefold without any intervention on my part, and I broke down. I'm trying again tomorrow.

I have been run pretty ragged all this last week, so the whole thing is really a blur. Seven stud tournament on Saturday was good, Halo 2 is still good, and sleep will be the bestest thing of all!!!11one

In closing, this may be the finest explanation of Occam's Razor I've ever seen. Nothing apropos of my linking it - it's just awesome.

PS - I need measuring cups with measurement indications on them. Or a paintbrush or something.

There are dry-roasted cashews everywhere, and nowhere left to run.

Well, I'm glad to hear you haven't given up on the effort, it's definitely a worthy cause.

And I agree, that's a great explanation explanation of Occam's Razor.

I cut out sugary foods & ones that drip with grease for 3 days.

Tonight, AFTER dinner, I had two slices of pizza, 2 big cups of ice cream, and about 8 or 9 of those Pirouette hazelnutchocolate-filled tube cookies.

I, too, am hoping that tomorrow I can start anew with better resolve. Good luck to you.

My personal favorite is:
"Occam's Razor: How scientists cut through the bullshit."
Yours is probably more educational. :-)

Also, OXO makes a sweet measuring cup that can be read from the side orthe top. Excellent stuff, OXO.

i like to call Occam's Razor the "Non-Proliferation of Universal Entities Act."

i will elaborate more if you like, but when i started to use the word "milieu" i had to stop myself.

so, occam wasn't all like "keep it simple, stupid"

he was all like "look, you freaky medieval theologians: there is no reason to make all this shit up. just, stop unneccesarily duplicating universal entities. take this trinity BS. i mean, come on."

i can't find the primary text just now (not really looking that hard), but it is very specific to the "late medieval/early modern religio-philosophical milieu" (that's what i wrote earlier).

the part where we made occam's razor super useful came later. which it is: super useful. and we (as the western philosophical tradition) were perfectly within our rights and duties to extend it to all the circumstances in which it isis so super useful. it just was originally applied only to the redundancy of universals.

am i even making sense? if not, i'll try again in the morning.
