Five what by five what? That's the thing: nobody knows.
For all of you who have ever wondered, here's what five by five means.

Thanks, Jenny!

Emphasis mine
Don't worry, we're sure to spot Faith first. She's like this cleavagy slut-bomb walking around "Ooh, check me out, I'm wicked-cool, I'm five-by-five."

I had no idea what the dropship pilot in Starcraft was saying for *years*.

The only places (other than Buffy) that I'd ever heard the expression were in Aliens (the dropship pilot) and Starcraft (every dropship pilot). Now it makes a hell of a lot more sense.

The Templars talk in Guns and Roses album titles if you keep clicking, but I didn't know that until a G-n-R fan overheard me clicking the crap out of one of them in a lab once.

Oddly enough, I grew up around CB radios, and knew that.

Also, I'd played Starcraft (as have so many of you out there in TVLand) until I wanted to smack the dropship pilots. It wasn't until I watched Aliens years later that I had that "Holy Movie Reference, Batman!" moment.

Ha! I knew about 5x5, but didn't know about the Templars! Funny!

I am apparently a greater god of reference knowledge than you.

"Music reference knowledge god" - definitely.
"Deviant sexual practive knowledge god" - still János.

Gah, me too! Always thought it was just 'five-five-five' or something. I kinda avoided using the Terrans because of her. She irritates me.

You'll often hear this in US military transmissions:

Red 6: "Red 2, this is Red 6. Radio check. Over."
Red 2: "Red 6, this is Red 2. Lima Charlie. How me? Over."
Red 6: "Red 2, Red 6. Same same. Out."

Lima Charlie means "loud and clear."
