Zombie Readiness Exercise #3/4 - Firearms/Heavy Weapons
Poll #232501 Zombie Readiness Exercise #3/4 - Firearms/Heavy Weapons

Of the following, which would you select in event of a zombie attack?

Shotgun (Shot)
Shotgun (Slugs)
M16 (If you have a version in mind, explain below)
Revolver (caliber > .22)
.22 Pistol
.22 rimfire rifle
Carbine rifle
JAR (Secret Service issue sniper rifle)
SMG (Any submachine gun)
Other (explain below)
None (explain below)

Of the following, whichwould you select in event of a zombie attack?

Grenade launcher
RPG/LAW (not a game, Mal)
Machine/Chain Gun | SAW
Other (Explain below)
None (Explain below)

Don't complain about a lack of options - bear in mind that you will likely have to carry most of these with you at all times, in addition to any back-up weapons you may have previously selected. The choice is within the category, the total picture is the fourth exercise.

Since I don't have any real experience with firearms, I'd have to stick to the simple ones. In my experience with pellet guns and paintball guns, I've learned that I have terrible aim, hence a shotgun loaded with shot would be more useful to me than a rifle, though I wouldn't mind having some slugs too in case the zombies got really close. I could just carry one shotgun and both kinds of ammo. And then if the zombies got too close, I'd need a nice handgun, but probably a high-caliber one to make sure it actually takes down the zombies.

I'd probably do more harm than good if I was armed with any of the heavy weapons. I have terrible aim and such, plus I'm not exactly very strong. Maybe I could handle a grenade launcher, but I my aim would be so bad that it would be pointless. Zombies aren't going to be scared off by grenades detonating 50 yards away from them.

I think the flamethrower would be worse than useless in general, because zombies don't care if they're on fire. They'll just keep running around, and they might set your house/fort/defenses on fire.

I think that's one of the smartest answers I've seen so far - a good balance of realism with optimism. It's important to put in some time thinking about these things ;-)

Other: One .45 automatic pistol, please. And an M16 for longer range work. And a Chaingun for "a whole bunch of motherfuckers."

So you're saying I can't use a trebuchet designed to launch gamers at tanks?
Hoc Est Qui Sumusdiscoflamingo on January 13th, 2004 08:36 am (UTC)
Do you own a trebuchet, know where to get one, or how to make one?

Daddy only goes to war with his Desert Eagle:

For large groups of zombies I prefer machine guns with some hand grenades for fun.

My aim may not be pristine, but with most hand or shoulder-mounted weapons, if I can sight it, it is dead...er...I mean, no longer undead.

The flamethrower is tempting, but it wouldn't stop the zombies until the brain was well-burned -- giving them precious seconds to continue attacking.
Hoc Est Qui Sumusdiscoflamingo on January 13th, 2004 09:55 am (UTC)
Very excellent points - also, flamethrowers are also really hard to find. Meaning that most flamethrowers are home-made, which means I trust it about as much as I feel like strapping a tank of gas on my back and flicking a Bic from here to Jersey.

Wow... after the last 3 quizzes, I almost feel ready to take on zombies.

I'll definitely go with a pair of 9mils, a shotgun, and an aluminum baseball bat, and a REALLY sharp sword.

Ammo is pretty regularly available for the first two (any sporting goods store). I think I could crush a skull with the 3rd. And the forth, just cause swords are neat.

The fourth quiz should be the big-picture wrap-up, with some short passages from the book I'm basing them on.

One side benefit for the flame thrower is ease of cigarrette lighting.

It also promotes ease of dying.
But hey - why duplicate work?

I'm backing Ward up on the AK-47. I think it wouldn't break down as much as an M-16, and it's great for close and long range.

absolute first choice: two (2) beretta 92fs with extended clips and as many spare clips as i can manage. handguns are your friend.

i voted carbine rifle, because my first rifle was an 8mm mauser, and i love it to this day. i'm assuming i can get a carbine in anything up to and a little larger than that. actually, i'll take any rifle, but with zombies running around, .22s are piffling, so larger than that. also, i'll take pretty much any shotgun as well, slugs or otherwise, and if i can get one with a full choke, that's all for the good. though i'm less good with shotguns than with rifles. i'm also fairly certain i can handle an AK; i figure if it's got sights, i'm ok.

my mother's .243 comes to mind. oh, and her 12 gauge riot gun.

while Desert Eagle .50 makes my panties wet, i'm going to be needing my wrists later, when i run out of ammunition.

PP7, silenced.
It's what I know best.

also, I'm not sure what category this falls under, but I think the One Ring is not a bad way to go. Besides, I'm ready and willing to put that fucking thing on.

heavier artillery
flame on.

I just like the idea of a shotgun under one of my dusters. Also like the ak-47 for any wilderness trecking..that's also why i chose the machete =) Lastly, i'll take a .38 caliber revolver cause it's what my dad uses and he'd likely be coming along for action cause he's like that anyway.

Sides, he also uses chucks=)

as for the really heavy artillery, i don't think i'd be suited to carrying all that other stuff AND anything like a flamethrower. Gunn can have the flamethrower if she really wants it. As for cigarettes, i'll just steal all the lighters and smokes left over from the mental health patients after the hospital "blows up in the attack" (evil grin)

Gimme the .22...
Again, coming late to the party, but I personally would plunk for at least a couple of .22 weapons; a semiauto .22 target pistol and a .22 semiauto rifle.

There are a whole bunch of dead Russian officers who got plinked in the head by Chechen snipers armed with .22's. It's got a nice flattish trajectory, and enough oomph to punch into a human skull at 100 meters and then spin and bounce and rattle around the inside for a while. And they're light, handy, and you can carry insane quantities of ammo. Plus, you can improvise very effective field expedient silencers for .22's by cutting a hole in the bottom of a 2-litre soft-drink bottle and slipping it over the muzzle.

Similarly, in case of zombie attack, there's a case to be made for a 20-gauge shotgun in lieu of a 12; lighter, less recoil, you can carry more ammo, and it's still powerful enough to drop deer and humans with well-placed shots. Plus, you've got the usual shotgun versatility; rifled or sabot slugs for long range, buckshot for close range, scope mounts, etc...
