Mal - it seems fool-proof to me, but I AM A FOOL
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Allendale 2.2GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail - $146.00

Intel BOXDG965WHMKR LGA 775 Intel G965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail - $116.99

2GB Worth of Kingston RAM, certified to work with said motherboard - $74

But this could work for me almost as much as for you. I won't need a video card right away (since I don't do intense gaming), I have RAM upgrade options, and it's under $400. Also, there are several confirmed Linux sightings that don't involve binary drivers. Color me . . . fuligin.

Holy crap do I need to go to sleep.

Well now...
Processor is good--I'd go for the 4 MB cache one (cause it will be a long time before you outgrow it) but the price is right and it's solid.

Intel motherboards are good and solid--but you can't overclock them, obviously. Probably not a factor for you. The integrated video is crap--but you don't game much, so it can wait (see overclocking).

That's a great price for 2 GB of ram; BUT, generally, you want to get RAM that's as fast as your fastest bus speed. Your bus can go up to 1066--I'd probably get that 1066 RAM for the best performance. But, that really is a good price from a good brand for 2 GB.

Did you just build me a system--for no reason?

I started building it for you, but then realized that I wanted it for myself. MINE.

Doc, these are consumer goods. You don't have to share. You both can have one, and the retailer will just be happy. Now, I know you want to make a retailer happy today.

EXPLAIN HOW.

Can money be exchanged for goods and services?
If so, WOO-HOO!
beltramgregor on August 23rd, 2007 06:39 pm (UTC)
Indeed they can. In fact, people who provide goods and services love money. Isn't that convenient since all those bills were just cluttering up your desk.

Which is probably for the best, since it's more expensive than I want and it violates my primary rule of showing up at my new apartment in one piece.

How much do you want to spend, and what do you want?

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Conroe
For $32 more you can get a 2.33 GHz processor with a 1333 MHz FSB and 4 MB shared L2, also a LGA 775.

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Conroe
I will look into it. I'm mostly concerned about thermal at this point, since I would like to be able to run it more quietly than my current CPU.

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Conroe
Then I would recommend this it is very close to what I use and paired with the appropriate quiet fan it should be almost noiseless.

If you do some more intense gaming then I would recommend one of GigaBytes fan-less video cards like this one here.

If you really want a quiet computer you NEED to look into a quiet power supply. Most people overlook this and wonder why their computers are so loud. Don't skimp on this piece or you will regret it.
