Call me an idiot,
But I think this might actually be a good year for movies. Here's a list of movies that might show some promise in the upcoming months. Feel free to correct me if they will, in point of fact, just suck.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (I don't care about the Internet pundits - I'm going to see it)
xXx: State of the Union (I liked the first one, and will hopefully like this one for similar reasons)
Kingdom of Heaven (Ridley Scott + The Crusades = Oh Yeah!)
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (The Catharsis!)
Hauru no ugoku shiro (Miyazaki!)
Unleashed (Jet Li + Bob Hoskins = I WANT TO KNOW)
Batman Begins (I have hope. I have hope. I have hope . . .)
Land of the Dead (George Romero + Zombies = Should be Good)
Undead (okay, this one will probably suck, but it looks cool)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Hopefully not a train wreck)
The Island (Ewan MacGregor in Sci-Fi dystopia. I hope he doesn't get typecast.)
The Brothers Grimm (Terry Gilliam, baby!)
Nochnoy dozor (Russian film about the forces of light and darkness)
The Pink Panther (aka "Steve Martin Gets Work")
3001 (Office Space's Mike Judge, writer/director)
Corpse Bride (Depp/Carter/Burton, again)
Serenity ('Nuff Said)
The Curse of the Were-Rabbit Starring Wallace & Gromit (Ditto)
Doom (This will be pure, uncut popcorn)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (I hope it's PG-13)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (This had better not suck, but my expectations are low)

Howl's Moving Castle needs to hurry up and get released stateside. You'd think the machine would be a little bit sleeker by now, but no, it's not like Disney cares. I have issues with Kingdom of Heaven because it appears to be another "yay white people smashing Arabs on their own turf" movie. Why can't any document (textual or filmic or whatever) do an even-handed look at this stuff? Why are there no officers of Saladin saying, "Who are these pale-faces and why do they think they own our land?" I agree with you wholeheartedly when it comes to Unleashed, though. Soundtrack by RZA and Massive Attack? Rawr.

I'm more interested in seeing how Ridley Scott deals with a Crusade where the Europeans lose, which is the particular Crusade that he's dealing with. He's going to have Christians and Muslims alike crying foul, and I'm planning on reserving my judgment until I've seen it.

Most other people aren't waiting; the IMDB threads are absolute shit. Like, "I can't believe my monitor doesn't stink" shit. This is a rare exception:

Here's a Times article about the opposite problem (how WASP's are making this about them):

I'm slightly puzzled at Orlando Bloom being cast as a Semite, myself.

I wasn't trying to shoot my mouth off, I was just going off of the content of the commercials, which naturally don't reveal a lot. Excuse me.

It's okay. I have only seen the one trailer, and that was the teaser.

Why would you want to give money to the makers of Kingdom of Heaven? Or do you, too, have a horrible cultural deathwish?
Hoc Est Qui Sumusdiscoflamingo on April 28th, 2005 09:41 pm (UTC)
This is the Crusade where Saladin re-takes Jerusalem. I'd much rather see that than the Third Crusade.

I have told you of Alan & I's precise thought processes as we saw the trailer in front of Constantine haven't I?

Oh, by the way, I forgot you told me to do this:

IDIOT!

I can't wait until tommorow afternoon, that's when I'll be seeing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I haven't heard about Firefly until recently, after it went off the air, so I have no idea what kind of series it was. Sounds somewhat interesting though.

However, I'm definitely looking forward to the Doom movie and the next Harry Potter movie. They've done a pretty good job with the Harry Potter movies so far, so I'm sure they'll contiue doing a good job with them.

I didn't realize that they are making a movie out of the Chronicles of Naria but I sure hope they don't screw it up. That is one of the greatest series of all time.
Doomutilitygeek on April 28th, 2005 10:25 pm (UTC)
If you have not seen Firefly, this is a good time to hunt down a friend with a copy of the DVDs. A Western in Space (tm) with good writing, good acting, and, um.... more goodness!
lyght on April 28th, 2005 11:03 pm (UTC)
So, what exactly did you do to get a movie made about you, anyway?
Doomutilitygeek on April 28th, 2005 11:26 pm (UTC)
Well, for starters, I was knee deep in the dead....
Actually, it's a Freudian interpretation of my life, focusing on my id.
My character starts out very two-dimensional, but by the third act, has some depth.

Pay attention, boy! I'm pure, uncut popcorn!

Nochnoy Dozor
Watch the trailer for Night Watch at apple and you'll be sold.
This will be my movie this summer with the exception of TBG below,
and I will infact save my admissions for all the movies above
to see this movie over and over.

Disco.. should you pay for Pink Panther (shit, we're really out of ideas) or Charlie and Chocolate Factory (no, i was kidding before, now we're really really out of ideas) in deference to these, you will be excommunicated:

The Brothers Grimm (Terry Gilliam Strikes Back)
40 Year Old Virgin (Steve Carrell gets a starring role)
or Four Brothers (remember John Singleton?)

p.s. Howl's Castle comes out June 10

Re: Nochnoy Dozor
Night Watch is hitting the states in theatrical? Sweet! And it looks like it's subbed--double sweet!

A friend of mine was telling me a month ago that I had to track this down...

Re: Nochnoy Dozor
Okay, that trailer just did horribly wonderful things to my brain.
Josiah Carlsonchouyu_31 on April 29th, 2005 03:23 am (UTC)
At least for the narnia movie, Tilda Swinton is playing the White Witch, which should be entertaining.
Hoc Est Qui Sumusdiscoflamingo on April 29th, 2005 04:44 pm (UTC)
She was completely swank in Constantine. Definitely entertaining :-)
Josiah Carlsonchouyu_31 on April 29th, 2005 05:04 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't have called her 'swank', perhaps 'freaky'. I think she'll do fine.
Hoc Est Qui Sumusdiscoflamingo on April 29th, 2005 05:13 pm (UTC)
The concepts of swank and freaky are pretty blurred in that movie - especially Gabriel in that movie.
XCorvisxcorvis on April 29th, 2005 03:10 pm (UTC)
The full-length Batman Begins trailer is much less interesting than the teasers. My high hopes have been dashed on the ground.

I weep for Aronofski's Batman: Year One that will never be.
Hoc Est Qui Sumusdiscoflamingo on April 29th, 2005 05:02 pm (UTC)
I really don't think the trailer is that bad. Again, I have to reserve judgment.
